  • Annette Seib, '51

    Annette Seib, '51

Annette Seib, who was born into the Depression in Hays, Kansas, and went on to become the matriarch of a large and happy family, died Tuesday night. She was 88. Annette was married for almost 69 years to Richard Seib. Together they raised seven children who were the center of their lives, and watched with pride as their family grew to 22 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Known to family and friends as Nettie and Dick, they were fixtures in their St. Joseph’s Parish community in Hays until they moved in recent years to be near sons in the Kansas City area. Annette Louise Doerfler was born on Oct. 23, 1933, the 10th of 11 children of Joseph and Agnes Doerfler. Her father was, among other things, the sheriff of Ellis County, Kansas, for a time, which led to a memorable period in which his family lived in the county courthouse and jail facility. Growing up in Western Kansas amid the difficult economic times of the Depression left a lasting impression on Nettie and instilled in her a lifelong tendency toward frugality; among other things, she was known to reuse coffee grinds for a second pot. She also developed an appreciation of the importance of family and faith and the value of work. That appreciation of work, in fact, led her to meet the man who became the love of her life. While at Girls Catholic High School in Hays—where she served as junior class president—Nettie took a job as a car hop at the Yankee Dollar, a drive-in restaurant in Hays. There, one night, a handsome young farm boy named Richard Seib volunteered to drive her home after work. That meeting blossomed into romance and eventually to marriage. But their young marriage was soon interrupted by war. Her husband’s National Guard unit was activated and sent to Korea when war broke out there, forcing him to leave behind Annette as she was expecting their first child. Tom Seib was born while his father was overseas. After the war, the young couple went on to have six more children, while a beloved niece, Belinda Seib, effectively became a member of the immediate family as well. All of them attended the Catholic high schools known variously as St. Joseph’s Military Academy, Thomas More Prep and Marian High School in Hays. Nettie was an active and involved parent in her children’s schools, as well as in parish life. She also was a skilled pinochle and dominos player, a noodle maker, and a master at stretching a dollar. As her children grew older, she resumed working outside the home for several years as a sales associate at K-Mart, a job she embraced with relish. One skill Nettie never mastered was the ability to sit still. Sitting through a single episode of a TV show, much less a long movie, was a struggle for someone who was always seized with the need to be up and about, doing something—anything—constructive. In retirement, Nettie and Dick were regular travelers for as long as their health allowed, crossing the state of Kansas, and periodically the country, to be with their children and grandchildren. Christmases often were brightened by gifts of handmade crocheted afghans and embroidered kitchen towels she shared with her family. In her final days at Colonial Village in Overland Park, Kansas, Nettie never lost that nervous energy that kept her moving throughout her days, even as physical frailties made that more difficult. Her motto, often expressed to visitors and staff members alike, was that she felt a need to “go, go, go." She was preceded in death by her husband in 2019 and by two infant grandchildren. She is survived by a sister, Kathy Rohr, of Hays, and a brother, Harold, of Hutchinson, Kan.; and by her children Tom (Cheryl) of Lincoln, Neb.; Phyllis (Robert) Brack of Bay St. Louis, Miss.; Debbie (Bob) Lang of Amarillo, Tex.; Jerry (Barbara) of Chevy Chase, Md.; Jeff (Kelly) of Overland Park, Kan.; Paul (Johnna) of Kansas City, Mo.; and Pat (Susie) of Overland Park, Kan.; and by Belinda (Merle) Mahoney of Hutchinson, Kan. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Church in Hays at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 13, with burial at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. There will be a visitation 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Sunday evening, Dec. 12, with a combined parish vigil and rosary service at 7 p.m. all at Brock's-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine in Hays. If desired, friends may make memorial contributions in Annette Seib’s name to TMP-Marian Junior and Senior High School in Hays. Condolences may be shared by guest book at www.keithleyfuneralchapels.com or by email at keithleyfuneralhomes@gmail.com

  • Bernice Unrein, '46

    Bernice Unrein, '46

Bernice Amelia (Ruder) Unrein, age 92, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 17, 2021, in Overland Park, KS. Bernice was born August 3, 1928, in Hays, KS, to Carl and Rosa (Rupp) Ruder and delivered by her future father-in-law, Dr. Gerard Unrein. Bernice grew up on the family farm south of Hays and her parents eventually moved to town when she was in high school. She graduated from Girls Catholic High School in 1946 and worked as a telephone operator until her first child was born. Bernice met the love of her life, Francis Alfred Unrein, in high school and they were married on June 7, 1948, in Hays. They were happily married for 69 years until Francis’ death in 2017. To this union brought four children Keith (Sandy), Overland Park, Marybeth (Warren) Harwick, Ft. Worth, TX, Kevin (Jyl) Chanute, and Robin (David) Hagedorn, Mission. Upon Francis’ graduation from the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy, job opportunities in Norton and Oakley brought Francis and Bernice back to North Central Kansas, and eventually Francis purchased his own store, Unrein Drug Store, in Plainville, KS, their home for the next 59 years. Francis and Bernice owned and operated the drugstore until Francis’ retirement in 1991. Throughout her life, Bernice was an active member of the Rooks County Health Center Auxiliary, volunteering in the gift shop, Sacred Heart Catholic Parish, and later Curè of Ars Catholic Church in Leawood. She was a devoted wife to Francis and mourned his loss every day. She loved being a mother but her role as a grandmother and great grandmother brought her the most joy. Bernice also enjoyed cooking, gardening, close friendships, hosting family get-togethers, embroidery, knitting, and making sure everyone had something to eat or drink (even in her final days.) You could often find Bernice and Francis on the golf course, relaxing on their patio, and watching the KU Jayhawks and golf on tv. Bernice loved and defended fiercely those close to her. With perseverance, she survived breast cancer, a stroke, moving to Kansas City in her 80s, and embracing life after Francis’ death. She had a beautiful smile, joyful laugh, rosy cheeks, and great hair. She loved her family, her faith, and her friends, but nothing compared to the love she had for Francis. Bernice was proceeded in death by her parents, husband, Francis, brothers Marcellus, Alphonse, Julius, and Norman, sisters Irene Munsch, Mary Rose Dreiling, and Alma Keaton, and son-in-law, Alan McClure. She is survived by her sister, Lorraine Arnold Cook of Denver, CO; her four children and spouses, and many extended relatives. Bernice was a loving “Mimi” to her grandchildren Lindsay (Jonathan) McPhail, Fairway, Kelly (Drew) Nicholls, Georgetown, Grand Cayman, and Spencer McClure (Erin Horn), Ft. Worth, TX. She was also the proud “Great Mimi” of great-grandsons, Kai and Keiran McPhail, and great-granddaughter, Astrid McClure. Alfreda’s father, Alfred, was a butcher and ran the family grocery store, Wiesner’s, on Main Street. As a girl, Alfreda loved to visit her father in the store and help with grocery deliveries. She loved being outdoors, gardening, riding her bike around Hays and going to the country to ride her horses and to fish. She was also an avid reader, a hobby that gave her much pleasure her entire life. She attended, St. Joseph’s Parochial School, Girl’s Catholic High and Fort Hays State University. In 1962, she married Wilfric Karlin and they made their home together on a farm near Catherine. Alfreda gave up teaching to raise her two children John Karlin and Ruth Karlin Albrecht. She continued her love of teaching as an elementary religious ed teacher for the Catherine parish for many years where she was a member. Alfreda loved the country life. She loved animals and flowers and the beauty of nature. She took long walks on the family farm several times a day. She loved to travel and see the world. She visited all 50 states, both neighboring countries, and took many trips abroad to Europe, China and Australia. But she always loved returning to her home on the farm where she lived until 2016. Alfreda’s special request: As a young girl Afreda was extremely shy. As an adult she would make a friend everywhere she went. She was gentle, kind to all, and curious about everything. She especially liked to seek out an individual who was all alone or who looked totally different than herself and strike up a conversation. She would start with a compliment or a question. She was truly interested in who they were, and it showed. She was always received with a smile and kindness. People loved when she approached them to compliment a piece of jewelry or hairstyle, for example. She asked the story of their tattoos, piercings, dreadlocks, or just how their day was going. She wanted to make people feel good about themselves. In her memory, she wanted everyone to smile at a stranger, give a compliment to the person next to you, or start up a conversation with the person standing by themselves. Find common ground, really connect with all people and learn how to love your neighbor better.
